Bupa Global sponsors International Employee Benefits Association event in Brussels

We joined HR leaders, employers and employee benefits specialists at the latest International Employee Benefits Association (IEBA) Annual Conference in Brussels.

A key highlight for us at the event was our breakout session: Challenges of Mental Health in the Workplace. This featured Paul Smith, Relationship Direct at JAAQ, and Jo Williams, Wellbeing Lead at Nationwide Building Society.

Mental health challenges in the workplace

According to JAAQ, seventy-nine per cent of employees experience work-related stress at some point in their careers. Our discussion explored this challenge facing many organisations today.

Paul Smith shared that while investment in mental health support continues to grow, outcomes are not always improving at the same pace. He noted investment has never been higher, yet outcomes continue to worsen for employees.

The conversation focused on what employees need beyond simply offering benefits. This included leadership buy in, psychological safety, and creating workplace cultures where people feel comfortable discussing topics such as grief, menopause, fertility and neurodiversity. They also need to be able to access support earlier in their wellbeing journey for better outcomes.

"It was great to be back at the IBEA Conference this year. One of the most valuable parts of the discussion was hearing Nationwide’s experience and the impact that a strong wellbeing partnership can have on employee engagement. The conversation highlighted that creating better outcomes is not just about providing support, but ensuring it feels accessible, relevant and easy for employees to engage with in their everyday lives."
